LiDAR VR Viewer: Immersive Visualization of 3D Data

LiDAR VR Viewer is a free Android application developed by Jules Morel. It is a powerful tool that enables users to visualize point clouds and surfaces in 3D through virtual reality. The app is designed for virtual reality head-mounted displays such as Google Cardboard and utilizes all-native rendering utilizing OpenGL ES 2.0. With a Bluetooth controller, users can control camera movement and explore 3D data with ease.

LiDAR VR Viewer supports point cloud ASCII files with colors for points from elevation, intensity, or RGB values. It also supports point clouds with normals, which are rendered as surfels (work in progress). The app can handle point clouds with up to a few million points, depending on the smartphone GPU. Additionally, LiDAR VR Viewer supports surface mesh Wavefront .obj files.

The latest version of LiDAR VR Viewer offers new features such as demo files that are downloadable from the start screen, button mapping of Bluetooth controllers detailed in the start screen menu, and casting mode to broadcast the 3D model on TV (requires a controller). Please note that the currently supported input ASCII files must not contain headers and must have columns separated by space characters.

LiDAR VR Viewer is a useful and innovative tool for visualizing 3D data in virtual reality.
